US Citizens Now Need An E-Visa To Brazil 🇧🇷

Intro

About a month ago, when I had just come back from my trip to Carnaval, I wrote about how US citizens would soon need a visa to visit Brazil. While this was originally slated to go forward in 2024, it was later pushed back to 2025 and has now come into effect.

The Details

As of April 10th, 2025, citizens of the United States, Australia, and Canada will now need a visa or e-visa in order to visit Brazil. While it is nice that you do not have to visit the consulate to go to Brazil, you will still need to fess up 80.90$ for the e-visa.

However, there are two kickers for visiting Brazil.

  1. The E-Visa application approval can take up to 5 days. Obviously, a lot of American businessmen have last minute trips down to Sao Paulo and Rio for business, so the addition of e-visas could make this extremely difficult.

  2. Brazil will also require travelers to show proof of roundtrip flights, bank statements for all of their transactions in the past 30 days, and proof of funds showing they have over 2000$ in their bank account.

Brazil is beautiful, but this policy is a big step backward.

Now I have a couple of thoughts on this:

My Thoughts

As the tourism market in Brazil has boomed in the past few years, this is a huge step back for Brazil for a few different reasons.

Firstly, one would assume that the 81$ fee is so the government can get a cut due to the influx of tourism. I am completely fine with that, and rightfully so, but would it not have been possible to offer visas on arrival? I would much rather pay 100$ for a visa on arrival versus 81$ for an e-visa that takes 5 days...

It's funny that Brazil implemented this after Carnaval

Secondly, if we take away the money aspect, I am curious as to why Brazil are putting this in place for these three countries. The way I look at it, how many people are looking to move to Brazil and overstay their visas? Probably not too many... I am not here to say that what Brazil is doing is wrong, because it's not, it just doesn't make much sense when the tourism business is booming!

Additionally, this is not good for last-minute mileage redemptions in Business down to Brazil...

Final Thoughts

If you are planning a trip to Brazil in the future, be aware that the country now mandates travelers from the USA, Canada, and Australia to get E-Visas. Simply head over to the website and apply for an e-visa, and pay the 81$, but make sure to do it at least** 5 days in advance.
