Wow: Emirates Resumes Flights To Damascus, Syria 🇸🇾

Intro

Emirates has been known to be one of the most global airlines in the world, serving anything from Moscow to Tehran, and as far as Bogota. However, what I didn't see coming was Emirates resuming flights to Damascus, Syria. Wow.

The Details

As of yesterday, July 18th, Emirates launched its first direct flight in over a decade from Dubai to what is said to be one of the oldest cities home to civilization. The route is operated by a 777-200LR, with the following schedule:

EK913: Dubai to Damascus departing at 12:00 and arriving at 14:10

EK914: Damascus to Dubai departing at 16:30 and arriving at 20:30

Emirates will use a 777-200LR for this route, featuring only business and economy

It's quite interesting, as the frequency in which Emirates is offering these flights tends to vary quite a bit. Here is what the next few months look like:

  • Until August 2nd, Emirates will fly this route 3x per week, on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Saturdays.

  • From August 2nd onward, the extra flight on Sunday will be added, becoming a 4x weekly service.

  • As of October 26th, the service will then become daily from Dubai to Damascus.

This Is Very intriguing

This is just straight up fascinating to me as a whole. It's ultimately clear that Emirates had no plans to operate during the ongoing war in Syria, but as things have now stabilized, they have jumped straight back in. The interesting part to me is how long it took for Emirates to enact this change, considering Qatar flies 10x weekly, and Turkish flies 6x weekly.

Damascus is truly a one-of-a-kind place

On a personal note, I happened to end up in Damascus a few weeks ago, and simply loved the city. While visa fees have now been reinstated, it's a beautiful place to explore if you get the opportunity. From Afamia beer to lamb kofta to amazing hospitality, it was a place I quickly fell in love with.

Final Thoughts

For the first time in 13 years, Emirates has announced that nonstop flights have begun between Dubai and Damascus. Not only is this a huge step up for tourism connectivity, but for locals who are looking to fly somewhere. The best part? Plenty of space available on miles in business class!
