Vietjet Has Quietly Launched Flights Into Russia: Huge

Intro

The low-cost carrier based in Vietnam, Vietjet, has just crossed a new threshold, as it has become the latest carrier to launch flights into Russia from Southeast Asia. This is quite a big development, and let me explain why...

The Details

On June 15th, Vietjet launched its first-ever flight into Russia from Nha Trang to Vladivostok. For those unaware, Vladivostok is in the Southeast corner of Russia, and it is supposedly quite pretty.

On June 18th, Vietjet launched its second route into Russia from Nha Trang to Khabarovsk.

On July 9th, Vietjet will launch its third flight into Russia from Nha Trang to Blagoveshchensk.

Why This Matters

As we very well know, the market from Eastern Russia into Southeast Asia is predominantly dominated by Aeroflot, the national flag carrier of Russia (review coming soon). While Aeroflot fares are reasonable, this helps consumers in two different ways:

  • More flights. Roughly 210,000 Russian tourists visited Vietnam last year alone, which represents significant numbers on a solely one-way basis

  • With the addition of Vietjet, fares are now much cheaper than Aeroflot. While not quite as nice as Aeroflot, it is nice to have two different options.

Overall, I think this is very positive for Vietjet, and I will be especially excited if we ever see their A330s flying to Moscow.

Final Thoughts

Vietjet has quietly launched its first two routes into Russia, marking the first carrier based in Southeast Asia to fly into Russia at the moment*. This is extremely exciting for consumers, as this allows for more options and better pricing in Eastern Russia. Let's see if that Moscow service will come soon!
