United Airlines New Dishware Coming May

Konrad Tillman

Intro

I've longed ranted and raved that United Airlines is my favorite carrier in the USA due to their extensive long-haul network and consistent long-haul business class product. However, it seems as if their in-flight dining experience is about to become a whole lot better since they are adding nicer dishware in premium cabins!

The Details

Beginning in May, United has announced that international flights will have nicer dishware, while domestic flights should be getting this sometime in June. While nobody knows exactly what this new dishware is, I imagine it is going to be a huge upgrade and will somewhat compare to an Asian Carrier. When this was originally teased, somebody put out a picture looking like this:

Could this be served on long-haul flights?

If something similar to the picture would be served onboard, this would be a huge upgrade to what is currently served onboard.

I Am Impressed!

The biggest complaint I have heard across multiple forums is the quality of the food that United provides to their long-haul passengers. I certainly understand the complaint and am somewhat inclined to agree. However, I believe that in due time we will begin to see better food being rolled out in their long-haul markets in Polaris. We've seen a decadent wine selection being brought out, a Polaris booklet with a menu, comfy pajamas, and now nicer dishware; the only thing left is the food part.

But I'd also like to add that I don't think all routes should necessarily have their food upgraded. As an example, a Domestic First Class flight from Washington to Los Angeles can run as low as 550$ for a 6-hour flight, while a Singapore Airlines 5-hour flight in Business will be nowhere near that cheap. You get what you pay for, and United understands that. Would you rather pay double and get lounge access and cheaper food on a plane in the US? I am curious to know...

But it is still no excuse for international Polaris...

Final Thoughts

United Airlines has announced that they will be upgrading their dishware for international flights as of May and for domestic flights in June. While this is a step in the right direction, they still have a long way to go for the quality of the food in International Polaris.
