Uganda Airlines Performs First Ever Engine Change In Entebbe

Intro

Here's not something you hear about every day, and for most major carriers, this wouldn't be something to write about. However, this is a huge development for the flag carrier of Uganda, as it will end up saving them a lot of money in the long run and improve efficiency.

The Details

Uganda Airlines, the boutique flag carrier of Uganda, operates a small fleet consisting of four CRJ-900s and two A330-800Neos. The airline serves a variety of destinations around Africa, Europe, India, and Dubai, with sights set on expanding.

However, for the longest time, the airline has struggled when it comes to maintenance. Anything that was a large mechanical issue meant that they had to send it to somewhere to get the maintenance done. Not only was this costly, but it took the aircraft out of service for longer than needed.

Well, last month, Uganda Airlines took to the news to share that they were able to complete their first-ever engine change on the CRJ900 in Entebbe. The entire operation was conducted by Ugandans and saved the company well over 100,000 USD, which is a significant cost for a boutique airline like this.

Not only that, but this marks a big stepping stone for the airline. While the A330s will still have to be sent out for maintenance, they no longer rely on international maintenance providers, which is a big step for a carrier from Africa.

I know I post a lot about African airlines, but few do, and I really want to see every single one win! 🙂

I Really Want To Try Uganda Airlines

I know this doesn't exactly tie into the main post, but I really want to try Uganda Airlines in business class on their A330-800Neo. For those unaware, Uganda Airlines operates direct flights from Entebbe to London, Dubai, and Mumbai multiple times weekly on their Neos.

I have been seeing many different reports online about this airline, and almost all of them prove to be positive. In business class, you will find a similar product to what is on the Garuda A330-900Neo, while economy is laid out with fresh seats in a 2-4-2 configuration.

Unfortunately, business class fares are on the higher side, especially in comparison to other carriers in the region. FlyDubai comes out to about 300$ cheaper for a one-way ticket from Entebbe to Dubai/Mumbai, which is a shame. Perhaps I can find a good deal to give this airline a go, especially since I live close by in Mozambique now...

Final Thoughts

The flag carrier of Uganda, Uganda Airlines, made history last month when it completed its first-ever engine change on its CRJ900. For most carriers, this wouldn't be a huge deal, but this will not only open up a realm of opportunities in the country for engineers as they seek to expand their fleet, but it will also save the company plenty of money in the long run. Now, if only they can figure out how to do this with the much more complicated A330-800Neo, this will make it even better.

Hopefully, I'll be able to try out Uganda Airlines soon and report back on the re-invented airline after the amazing things I have heard. Even in economy, free checked bags, nice meals, and spacious seats. Maybe I'll have to give that a shot and try a last-minute upgrade. Anyone who has flown this airline can maybe chime in? Thanks!
