Intro
The aviation market has been expanding tremendously recently, with the reintroduction of Somali Airlines, Air Côte d'Ivoire taking delivery of their first A330-900Neo, and Uganda Airlines coming out with some new announcements (will write about this later today).
But something that was not on my radar was Niger getting a flag carrier, and I've gotta say, what an exciting time for the region!
The Details
For quite a few decades, the country of Niger has had a difficult time operating a flag carrier. Whether it be due to instability in the region or lack of demand, it has proven to be a tough time.
However, as of September 4th, 2025, the government of Niger has approved a brand new flag carrier that is set to debut soon. While details are currently scarce, I would expect them to serve regional routes (especially Lagos) and use the 737/A320 on these routes. Perhaps they might go the way of the E135/145s, but I would say there is enough demand to fill a 320.
According to the Council of Ministers, they mentioned as follows:
Niger Air International will operate as a mixed-economy company. This structure allows for both public and private sector involvement, ensuring that the airline benefits from government support while leveraging private sector expertise and investment. The airline’s primary objectives include strengthening Niger’s economic independence, improving transport accessibility across the country, and fostering regional and international connectivity

My Thoughts
Niger has always been up there on my bucket list. I have heard the most amazing things about the country, but it's also proven to be a country that is somewhat of a challenge to get to. With the only direct flight to Europe being a seasonal one on Air France, Niamey isn't the most served capital in Africa by a milestone.
So, seeing this addition makes me excited for not just the continent of Africa, but Niger as a whole. If I had to take a wild guess, we would most likely see flights to Lagos, other parts of Africa, and Paris. It's interesting that if they decide to go the 737 route, they could easily be able to compete with Air France in the market, especially with the astronomical fares going around. Additionally, depending on fleet size, I could see them launching flights further West in Africa, giving Ethiopian Airlines a run for their money as they dominate the connecting traffic at the moment...
But let's see how it all pans out... All that I'm saying: airlines in Africa are extremely expensive from a consumer perspective, and any competition is good competition...
Final Thoughts
The country of Niger is launching a brand new flag carrier shortly, and I've gotta say, there is so much potential in this. Not only is this an exciting time for Niger, but as a consumer, there might be some competition when it comes to connecting traffic, which could drive prices down in the expensive African market. I'm excited to see which avenue they decide to go down in terms of aircraft and which routes they will serve. What do you think? Is Paris too much of a stretch? Perhaps we will see Casablanca or maybe Algiers?
Whatever happens, I hope they don't go down the route of the E135s and 145s...
