Initial Thoughts: Thai Airways 777-200 Business Class
Intro
Recently, I had an opportunity to fly Thai Airways on their dated 777-200 Business Class from Dhaka to Bangkok, and I was over the top impressed. I've gotta say that Thai Airways has one of the best business-class soft products in the world, and this flight just confirmed it further.
While I will have a full review in the coming months, I wanted to share a quick look at this stellar flight, as it was truly top-of-the-line!
The Lounge
The lounge that Star Alliance uses in Dhaka is top-of-the-line in terms of hard products but sort of lacking in soft products. Interestingly, Thai Airways cuts some corners in comparison with Singapore Airlines and Turkish Airlines. TG passengers do not get complimentary alcohol, but SQ and TK passengers do 😒.
It was a beautiful lounge, though, with ample seating and not too many people around🙂. That's always a plus😁.
The Hard Product
The flight from Dhaka to Bangkok is usually operated by a 777-200. However, in the days leading up, there had been multiple aircraft swaps to a 787-9 and 777-300, which would have been a much nicer hard product.
Something about flying the 777-200 on Thai Airways is nostalgic. Thai currently flies six of these aircraft around, and this is the last one that I haven't flown in.
Yes, the cabin isn't flat, and yes, the seats are old. However, the cabin is iconic and a blast from the past. It's sort of cozy if you get a window seat in the last row, like I did😅.
The Service
The service aspect is where Thai Airways shines over any other carrier in the world. Every small aspect of this two-hour flight was polished to the letter. Service started with a hot towel that had the Thai Airways logo on it... name me another airline that does this to this degree, I'll keep waiting...
So, like most airlines in overseas countries, Thai Airways does not serve alcohol on the ground. However, the FA taking care of me today profusely apologized and said as soon as they were 10,000 feet, they would crack open the Laurent Perrier for me. Laurent Perrier on a 2 hour flight??? Fantastic!
Well, the FA's actions followed their words. As soon as I hit 10,000 feet, I had a flute of champagne full as well as a glass of sparkling water. Thai Airways, you have my heart ❤️.
Throughout the meal, I was attempting to limit myself to a glass or two of champagne. However, the crew mentioned that they had a lovely glass of red that they would recommend with my beef... They brought around two bottles, opened them in front of me, and poured a little bit of each to see which one I liked the most.
I mean huh... I am blown away.
The Food
I was happy to see printed menus back in business class, as during Covid, these were more scarce. The menu was adequate enough for the flight, with a couple of main options as well as a couple of starter options.
The food in itself was quite good. It's not up there with the likes of the service, but it's still better than LOT and Polaris on this trip. Something about the garlic bread on Thai Airways pairs perfectly with the Laurent Perrier.
Unlimited refills were provided for the garlic bread, as I ended up consuming 6 in the space of 30 minutes 😅.
Final Thoughts
Thai Airways isn't the biggest or baddest airline out there. However, this flight confirmed why I think Thai Airways is the best airline in the world. TG offers the best service in the world, above-average food, and cabins from the golden era of aviation when people used to fly directly to the USA.
For now, this is just an initial thoughts report. Stay tuned for a full report coming soon!
