I'm Obsessed With Air Asia's Uncle Chin: Heaven

Intro

For anyone who has flown around SE Asia, I presume that you must have flown the infamous Air Asia. You know, the airline that offers fares for 100 USD for an international flight of less than 4 hours? Yeah, that one. Well, I know I am a bit late to the party, and many people might feel the same way, but the Uncle Chin dish on board Air Asia is one of the best meals I've had on a plane.

My Most Recent Flight

A couple of weeks ago, I was flying back to Laos, and decided on Air Asia to get me up to Luang Prabang, as Bangkok Airways was a little too expensive for me. Usually, I don't get excited by a low-cost carrier, but this time was different. Why? I was genuinely excited onboard to eat Uncle Chin 😅.

Now, usually when booking, I recommend pre-ordering your dish on Air Asia, as they can often sell out of these dishes onboard, which did end up happening on this flight. However, after handing out pre-orders, they did have a few leftover Uncle Chin's chicken and rice, so I scooped up on for about 6 USD.

Payment can be made in cash, and since I had some Baht, I settled on a Chang and Uncle Chin.

So why do I love Uncle Chin's chicken and rice so much? There are two main reasons:

  • It's actually delicious. I'm not sure how Air Asia pulls it off, but the chicken is succulent, and the rice is extremely flavorful. It's not something I would probably eat at a fancy dinner, but I would actively have this on an American Airlines flight to LA as an arrival snack, in business albeit...

  • Secondly, and probably one of my favorite parts, is that there is an actual menu laying out allergens, ingredients, and calorie intake. In this day and age, it's relatively rare to find this on airlines. As someone who recently went into anaphylaxis, this is a small thing that I really do appreciate.

It was so good I tried to order a second one, but they were sold out 😅

So, if you happen to be flying on Air Asia throughout SE Asia, you must try Uncle Chin's chicken and rice if you have yet to. It's truly worth the pre-order.

Air Asia Is A Good Airline

I actually think Uncle Chin's chicken and rice is a perfect example of the airline. Look, Air Asia isn't the nicest airline in the world, but it's more than acceptable for what you pay. Considering you can fly to Myanmar for 62 USD, Bali for 55 USD, and Vietnam for 40 USD, you honestly get a more pleasant experience than LCC throughout North America and Europe.

And honestly? It's not like they rip us off if we do purchase something onboard. A beer for 100 Baht, and a decent meal for 180 Baht? I'm more than happy when airlines unbundle onboard items, as long as they keep it reasonable (unlike French Bee, who charges 5 USD for a Kit Kat...).

Final Thoughts

While I am a little late to this party, I wanted to make a post touching on how much I adore Uncle Chin's chicken and rice on Air Asia. If you happen to be flying Air Asia, there is no doubt in your mind that you should pre-order this dish, and honestly, maybe two 😅. Stay tuned for a full review of Air Asia, as it's one of my favorite LCCs in the world!
