Hilarious: Passenger Checks In A 6 Pack Of Veuve Clicquot
Intro
Before I begin, I'd like to add that I read this on ViewFromTheWing, so thanks for bringing this up. I just wanted to share my thoughts on this as it's hilarious and resembles the Democratic Republic of The Congo.
There's a recent picture going minorly viral of a passenger picking up a six-pack of Veuve Clicquot at an airport in Goma. Checking in bottles of champagne isn't completely out of the ordinary, but there was no packaging around the bottles, only the champagne 😅.
What Happened/My Thoughts
Once arriving in Goma, this passenger made their way to the baggage claim to pick up their champagne. There have been some wild things on the belt before, ranging from Cucumbers to a singular can of beer, but this might just take the trophy!

So here is my theory:
Having visited the Democratic Republic of The Congo and just south of Goma in Bukavu, I found premium alcohol to be quite expensive. Heck, even at Hotel Nediva, a nice bottle of wine that would retail for around 50 USD ended up being around 130 USD. Considering the alcohol import tax is only around 17.5%, this is actually a decent way to bring champagne into the country.
As much as I love the DRC, it is also one of the most corrupt places I have been. I hate to say it, but money talks in Africa, and the DRC is no different. Handing off some Francs to the local officers might help turn a blind eye 😉. Look, I am being honest here...

Additionally, I also have to imagine that this might be one of the better ways to transport champagne (minus the special suitcases that have protection). When ramp agents are unloading bags, they often chuck them on the belt or on the cart. However, if you see a six-pack of Veuve, you are most probably not going to chuck glass everywhere. It's in everyone's best interest that it doesn't break...
All in all, this perfectly resembles what I saw in the DRC. I guarantee the passenger who did this was laughing once he actually received his "luggage." It's just a crazy country filled with fun and energetic people.
Final Thoughts
There is a picture going viral of a passenger picking up a six-pack of Champagne (Vueve) from the luggage carousel upon arrival. While a lot of people check in wines and champagne, I have never seen someone do so without a suitcase. Gotta love the DRC 🇨🇩❤️.
