Fiji Airways Ending Amenity Kits In Business Class

Intro

When flying long-haul business class in the world, almost all of the time, you will receive some sort of amenity kit. Whether you are in American Airlines business class to London or Aeroflot to Vladivostok, amenity kits have long been a staple of the business class experience.

Well, it seems that the flag carrier of Fiji is ending this tradition, for interesting reasons...

The Details

Going forward, Fiji Airways is removing amenity kits from all business class flights. For those who will be flying on the airline, you can now expect a flight attendant to come around with a tray of individual items where you can pick and choose what you would like to have for the flight.

As the CEO said in a press conference, two of the main reasons are waste and money:

“We’ve been measuring for years now how many people take the amenity kit home and actually value it and the number that are left behind. We started waking up that we are wasting money."

While I get why they are going this route, and it's a route many carriers take on regional flights (such as TG), it's a shame that you will not be able to request on demand. Amenity kits have become a collector's item for many, and I will always keep them, even if my bag is bursting full. But to each their own, and in the grand scheme of things, this isn't the largest issue we have in the world...

The Last Airline I Would Expect

Honestly speaking, Fiji Airways is the last airline I would expect to cut amenity kits. Why? Well, I feel like those flying to and from Fiji are almost always for leisure, and not business. I have read multiple reports online of frequent flyers leaving amenity kits behind, but on most of my flights, it would seem that leisure travelers usually take the amenity kits.

But then again, if a larger airline were to do this, the consequences would be dire, and multiple people might change their allegiance to a different airline. It's less about the amenity kit and more about the principle, at least in the way I see it.

What do you think?

Final Thoughts

In a controversial move, Fiji Airways is removing amenity kits from all business class flights going forward. For those who will need the standard toothbrush, eyemask, or hand cream, flight attendants will now be coming down the aisles with a tray to give them out individually. On the one hand, I appreciate the CEO being open and honest about this, but I hope this doesn't become an industry norm...
