Fiji Airways Adopts AAdvantage Program: Ehhh

Intro

Last week, on April 1st, Fiji Airways became a fully pledged member of the Oneworld Alliance. In the past, Fiji Airways had its own frequent flyer named the "Tabua Club" and while it had some alright redemptions, it was hard for most US-based travelers to gain the miles to redeem.

Well, that has changed now, as Fiji Airways now uses AAdvantage as their frequent flyer, and it's not the greatest news in the world for redemptions.

The Details

In the past few years, Fiji Airways and American Airlines had a strong alliance with one another, but this has now been strengthened with the airline adopting AAdvantage as their frequent flyer program.

Not only does this matter for redemptions, but elites on American Airlines will now have all of those perks from American Airlines when flying on Fiji Airways, such as an increased baggage allowance, lounge access, priority boarding, and more.

What Does This Mean For Redemptions?

Redeeming miles on partners on American Airlines miles is probably the biggest sweet spot of being an AAdvantage member, but with Fiji Airways, this has mostly gone down the drain.

For passengers looking to fly Fiji Airways from the US, the airline offers flights from Los Angeles, Dallas, San Francisco, and Vancouver (Canada) at a fixed business class rate of 80K miles. However, those that adopt the program, choose to make their business class awards dynamic pricing, meaning that it is tough to come across saver awards now.

I mean, if you have 230K miles to spend on a one-way ticket then go ahead, but only a few dates across the year (and more close in) offer saver space for 80K.

Additionally, with the dynamic pricing, economy awards can range as high as 100K one way.

Bonus trick: British Airways offers some attractive pricing when saver space opens up. As an example, I booked a one-way ticket for about 11,000 avios+ 220 USD which is quite a good deal. Business class isn't as good value-wise, but still not bad either

Final Thoughts

Fiji Airways, the national flag carrier of Fiji, has just adopted AAdvantage as their frequent flyer program as of April 1st, 2025. While this provides the opportunity for elites to gain benefits when flying Fiji Airways, this also means that award redemptions have become dynamic. Ehhh...
