Eating Springbok Pizza In Namibia

Konrad Tillman

Intro

During my time in Namibia, I got up to a lot of different activities, but one of the most fascinating experiences was eating Springbok on a pizza. Now, I want to add that a springbok is actually my favorite animal in the world, and I was hesitant to try it. However, I think it is also important to try everything once in life, and only in Namibia would I be able to try Sprinbok (probably other places, but I have never seen it offered).

The Experience

Following a nice rest onboard Airlink from Johannesburg to Walvis Bay, I was eventually able to find a taxi to take me on the 50-minute drive to Swakopmund. Throughout the drive, I noticed a major aspect: the Chinese presence in Namibia. Speaking with my taxi driver, he informed me that the Chinese do, in fact, harvest plenty of raw materials from Namibia.

Arriving at Swakopmund, my plan was to find a place to eat. I hadn't eaten all day and was getting grouchy because of it. As fate would turn out, my taxi driver happened to drop me off around the corner from a lovely restaurant by the name of Ankerplatz.

While Namibia is an independent country, it still features a heavy German influence. You can see it in the architecture, and with plenty of people that live there. In addition, there are multiple daily flights from Frankfurt to Windhoek.

Arriving at Ankerplatz, I was hungry and thirsty. As one naturally would on vacation, I ordered a nice cold Windhoek beer and the infamous Springbok pizza.

As I said, the Springbok is my favorite animal. However, I have to say, it is also delicious. To have it on a wood fire pizza was just a genius concept, and whoever thought of it needs a raise. Am I happy I ate it? Yes. Would I eat it again? No.

Just as I thought the day couldn't get better, I happened to make friends with a guy who was sitting at the bar. He was a local Namibian businessman who had come down from Windhoek for the weekend and wanted to go out that night. So the bartender, my new friend, and I all made a plan to head out that night to explore the nightlife of Windhoek. Saturday night in Namibia? Sign me up!

Final Thoughts

If you happen to be visiting Namibia, you must try Springbok (even if you have the same morale issue as me). If you want to take it a step further, head over to Ankerplatz and try out the Springbok pizza, as I promise it is like nothing you have ever had.

Keep in mind, much like with certain businesses in Namibia, Ankerplatz is closed on Sundays.
