Delta Ends New York To Munich Seasonal Flight

Intro

Another Delta transatlantic route is coming to an end. The last one we touched on was the New York-Paris daytime flight, and this one is to one of the biggest cities in Germany, Munich. With the competition in the market and the load factors of this route, I am certainly not surprised.

The Details

For the summer of this year, Delta added a variety of European seasonal destinations. One of these was a seasonal flight utilizing the 767 from New York to Munich. The route operates 3x weekly, which already feels like it was bound to be cut. The schedule was supposed to be from April 7th to October 24th of every year, although next year will be no more.

Delta 767

The schedule for the route was as follows:

DL238: New York to Munich departing 6:05 PM arriving at 8:25 AM (+1 day)

DL239: Munich to New York departing 11:45 AM arriving at 2:40 PM

Well, as noted by IshrionA, this route has been cut starting in 2025. If you want to try out the 767 on this route, you will have to do so before the 24th of October this year.

My Thoughts

It's a big shame to see another Delta route being cut. Of course, routes are always subject to change, but my guess is there was a limited market for those flying from New York to Munich. Considering the fact that Delta already flies from Detroit and Atlanta, as well as a nonstop from New York to Frankfurt, I don't see how a 3x per week operation was ever going to work.

Another aspect that stood out to me was the limited amount of connecting traffic in Munich compared to the likes of Frankfurt/Paris. Lufthansa is known to be the main carrier in Germany, and it is with Star Alliance, not Skyteam.

Final Thoughts

Delta Airlines has decided to axe its seasonal route from New York to Munich for the 2025 season. Another route that Delta has decided to cut, as it seems they are having a tough time making certain new routes work in Europe.
