Intro
Since the beginning of 2012, airlines across the United States have begun implementing the lowest way to get from Point A to Point B called Basic Economy. Since the implementation, these fares have become more restrictive, and basically just entitles you to a seat on the plane and a backpack.
Well, it seems to have gotten worse, as Delta has added a couple of details to their version of basic economy.
What Is Going On?
Going forward, it seems that Delta has added restrictions, and these depend on the region that you are flying. Domestic remains the same, while the following changes have been implemented internationally:
In terms of Europe
Delta usually charges a fee of 300 Euros to cancel or change a flight originating in Europe, and this includes the likes of Northwest Africa
However, going forward, there are now blackout dates between March and July of 2026 where these tickets cannot be changed or cancelled at all.
In terms of South America
Delta usually charges a flat fee of 199$ for those that need to cancel or change a basic economy fare originating in South America
Going forward, this will now be 330$...
Finally, you have Central America
While you are now able to change a ticket when booked into a basic economy departing Central America, the cancellation fee has now become dynamic
For everywhere else but East/Central Asia, you will pay a 99$ fee, while those flying to East/Central Asia will have to pay 199$

A Quick Thought
I am not going to dive into this much, as it is pretty obvious that Delta is trying to capitalize on cancellations through basic economy. While I get the concept of this, as this is what basic economy is about, it's tough for a first time flyer to have to go through this. Perhaps there could be a more leniet process for those that don't fly very much, and know how the systems work.
But that is no excuse for frequent flyers...
Final Thoughts
Delta Airlines has just raised their cancellation fees going forward for tickets booked into basic economy. Those looking to change or cancel may not be able to under select times, and if you are, expect to be paying more when originating in Europe, South America, and Central America.
