Booking A Flight To Yemen Is... SO COMPLICATED 🇾🇪

Intro

I love when stuff gets complicated when I travel, but there are certain times when it might just go a little bit too far. Well, I am heading off to Aden, Yemen, later this week, but I am having some issues with actually booking a flight...

The Details

For those unaware, Yemen is one of the most highly sanctioned countries in the world, with no bank payments available from the US to Yemen, and of course, no booking an airline online.

So, how do you book a ticket? Well, someone has to physically go to the ticketing office in Aden, and see if it's available, and then you must transfer money through Wise to pay for the ticket. Just one issue though, flights are sold out for the rest of May!

Yemenia must be doing really well as an airline if their flights are sold out

Well, at least on Yemenia that is...

So what does that leave me with? One option: Air Djibouti. The only flight that I could find was with Air Djibouti from JIB over to Aden, and then the same on the way back. While I really wanted to try Yemenia, I simply cannot get a ticket to fly with them!

This is certainly going to be an interesting flight

Now comes the real conundrum. It's the fact that the flight back from Aden to Djibouti lands in the evening, and Turkish Airlines doesn't operate their flight out of JIB that evening. With the need to be in Jakarta for dinner on the 1st, I am in a bit of a predicament. Without flying the angled flat Emirates, how am I going to make it in time for dinner in Jakarta?

Guess I might end up onboard this again

I guess the moral of the story is: don't be like me: book your flights early if you are planning on going to Yemen, and make sure you have someone on the ground!

Final Thoughts

I'm currently a few days away from embarking on a mission to mainland Yemen, but have no visas, no set flights, and everything is sort of up in the air. It seems like the flag carrier, Yemenia, is doing exceptionally well filling up their flights weeks in advance. Good for them, bad for me 😅.
