American Airlines Flies Wrong 787 To Italy: LOL

Intro

There are plenty of reasons that we see flight diverts over the years, but this one honestly might just take the cake. To fly the wrong variant of the 787 across the Atlantic Ocean is just... wow.

The Details

Earlier this week, American Airlines was operating one of its seasonal flights from Philadelphia to Napoli, which is usually operated by a 787-8. However, it seems that due to some last-minute schedule shifting, AA decided to replace this aircraft with a 787-9 for the day.

In the past few weeks, we have seen this flight operate without any hitches whatsoever, so after 8 hours when the plane began to descend, the flight deck was informed that they had to divert.

Quite an interesting diversion reason.
Quite an interesting diversion reason.

Due to the airport not authorizing the landing permission, the crew made the decision to divert to Rome, only 124 miles away.

What Happened To The Return?

In terms of passengers, this is pretty much all that we know for the time being. Apparently, American made a smart decision and switched out the 787-8 based at Rome, and flew that over to Naples, while this jet returned back from Rome the following day.

My question is, what would have happened to the passengers in an instance like this? If it were up to me, I would have just hopped off the plane in Rome and taken a train down, but I wonder if American Airlines arranged such a thing or even allowed it?

Final Thoughts

American Airlines has really outdone itself here, as they flew the wrong variant of the 787 to Naples and were forced to divert. However, mistakes do happen as everyone is human, and I am glad to see that passengers were only dropped off 142 miles from their destination.
