American Airlines Bringing Back Mattress Pads & Pajamas

Intro

Since COVID-19 occurred, we have seen American Airlines almost have a loss of identity in most ways. Cutting back majorly on international routes, lounges being outdated, and an overall sense of being not as 'premium' as Delta or United up front.

However, American Airlines has issued a statement that some things are about to change, effective almost immediately...

The Details

Starting summer 2025, and continuing on for the time being, American Airlines will now be providing the following for flights to and from Asia, the Middle East, Australia, India, and New Zealand:

  • Mattress Pads

  • Pajamas

Later this summer, American will further enhance the Flagship® Business class experience on all widebody flights to East Asia, the Middle East, India, Australia and New Zealand with the introduction of pajamas and mattress pads, in addition to the slippers, dual-sided pillows and duvet that are already offered."

American Airlines does offer pajamas in First Class, but this product will soon go away...

While this is a step in the right direction, it is unfortunate that American will not offer mattress pads to Europe, when United Airlines does in Polaris...

A Big Step Forward For AA

On paper, these additions might be minor and fair enough. However, this isn't the first time we have seen AA upping in terms of how premium they are as an airline. With upgraded lounges in Philadelphia, the addition of the 78P, and not collecting headphones 30 minutes before landing (which was absurd).

On a personal note, I recently flew the American 78P in Business Class and found the experience to be a lot better as a whole than before. The food was edible, the service was fantastic, and something happened in Chicago that blew me away. More on that in a separate post later. Perhaps American Airlines can make a comeback?

Final Thoughts

After cutting costs through a lot of different angles, it seems that American Airlines is making some steps forward to once again be a premium airline. All international long-haul flights will have slippers, while flights to Asia, Down Under, New Zealand, India, and the Middle East will feature a mattress pad and pajamas in business class!
